Learners’ Engagement in L2 Computer?Mediated Interaction: Chat Mode, Interlocutor Familiarity, and Text Quality

This study investigated the impact of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) mode and familiarity with partners on learner engagement in second-language task-based interaction, whether is linked to subsequent joint-written-text quality. Ninety-eight Vietnamese learners English were assigned into (±) familiar groups performed a picture-sequencing tasks 2 SCMC modes (i.e., video text chat). Scores 3 types (cognitive, social, emotional) compared across conditions. Results showed that scores all chat significantly higher than chat. Familiar dyads also unfamiliar peers during interaction. Learners reported different reasons for their preferences over Language-related episodes, semantically engaged talk, mutual help as measures predictive The results contribute general understanding characteristics
